Comparison
We tested both headphones simultaneously over two weeks, rotating them daily across identical use cases: daily commutes, a transatlantic flight, open-plan office work, and leisure listening. Here is what the data shows.
Noise Cancellation
Sony XM5: 38dB attenuation in our 65dB ambient test. Bose QC Ultra: 34dB. In real-world use the Sony blocks more of the drone frequencies that matter on transport; the Bose has a smoother, more natural-sounding noise floor with fewer artefacts.
Comfort (8-hour session)
This is where the Bose pulls ahead significantly. After 4 hours, the XM5 creates mild pressure fatigue at the ear-to-head contact point. The QC Ultra distributes weight across a larger surface area and we noticed no discomfort at the 8-hour mark.
Sound Quality
Both are excellent. The Sony is warmer and more consumer-tuned with fuller bass. The Bose is more neutral and analytical. Neither has a definitive advantage; this comes down to personal preference.
Our Pick
Sony XM5 for most people: better ANC, lower price, marginally better audio. Bose QC Ultra for those who wear headphones 6+ hours daily: the comfort advantage is real and meaningful.
