Buying guide
Laptop marketing is full of misleading numbers. “Up to 18-hour battery life” is measured with the screen at minimum brightness running a static page. “Quad-core processor” tells you almost nothing about real-world performance. Here is what actually matters.
Battery Life: The Most Important Spec Nobody Tests Correctly
The only battery figure you should trust is an independent real-world test at standardised settings. Our test runs at 150 nits brightness, 50% volume, with a loop of web browsing, document editing, and video playback. Manufacturer claims are typically 30-50% higher than our results.
The Processor Landscape in 2024
Apple M3 leads on performance-per-watt — by a significant margin. Intel Core Ultra and AMD Ryzen 7000 are competitive in raw performance but require active cooling, which means fan noise and thicker chassis. Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite is promising but software compatibility is still maturing.
Display Quality: The Spec Everyone Underweights
You will look at your laptop display for hundreds of hours. A poor display is a daily frustration. Prioritise: 300+ nits brightness, sRGB 100% colour coverage, and a matte coating for office use. OLED is excellent for content creation but has burn-in risk for static interface elements.
