Quick answer

What we would choose first

Best for: Designers, portfolios & service businessesPrice note: From $16/monthUpdated: Mar 14, 2026

Squarespace is the most design-forward website builder available. We built a portfolio site, a small e-commerce store, and a service business website to evaluate it comprehensively for small business owners.

Templates & Design Quality

Squarespace’s templates are genuinely excellent — the best we’ve seen from any website builder. They look professional immediately and are built on a design system that keeps custom modifications looking cohesive. A non-designer can produce a site that looks like it cost thousands.

E-commerce

Squarespace Commerce handles product listings, inventory, and payment processing (Stripe and PayPal) cleanly. Transaction fees apply on the Basic plan (3%), which adds up for high-volume stores — Shopify makes more sense above roughly 100 orders per month.
